Ivory Figure, Mangbetu, D.R.Congo

Carved in one piece of ivory. These kind of objects were made during the Lang period (1909-1915) by the Mangbetu and the Azande. Herbert Lang was appointed to lead an expedition in former Belgian Congo, for the American museum of natural history, together with James Chapin. Therefore, this period is known as the Lang period. 

This item is in good condition and measures 12 cm. 
Good condition with a rich tribal patina. 

These last years, a series of 8 books was published which describes old ivory sculptures and utensils of Congo, “white gold black hands”. 
Here is a picture from volume 7 

The provider guarantees that this is antique ivory, crafted before 1947, thus, permitted under CITES regulations. 
It will be delivered with a certificate of the Ruyten appraisal office, written by appraiser Jan Willem Ruyten. 
Will be sent by registered mail only within Europe

This Akuaba fertility doll has the same function as the doll with the same name from the ASANTE. 
Both groups belong to the AKAN. 
The big difference in shape is the rectangular head.

Magnificent little lot which consists in 3 African tribal sculptures. Two of the figurines have a seed as amulet and the human figure also has an amulet with an ossicle around the neck. The monkey is extremely used within the BULU tribe in the craftsmanship of sculptures and masks: it is a holy animal which is worshipped for its cleverness, humour, survival skills and its faculty to relativise. Monkeys also play an important role in the legends of the tribe and are often mentioned in joyful stories near the campfire. 

With traces of use and age which highlight the nice appearance of the sculptures.
